After 32 years as independent retailers in the Hamilton, Ontario area we have had to make the hard decision to close The Site of the Green. We have met so many people who became friends during our years in business and will miss all of you.
It seems the right time for us to close our business. During the past few years we have seen a decline in sales and it does not appear likely to rebound as we had hoped it would. The change in trends and the way people shop seem to have contributed to this decline. Many of our products are now made in China which has been upsetting to us and to many of our customers. The gift and tableware industry has had a number of setbacks during the last few years, most recently a number of our suppliers have gone into bankruptcy protection. We have built our business on service to our customers and lately we are often waiting for months for shipments. We apologize if you have been waiting for a long time: we are as frustrated as you have been. For these reasons and with the state of the current economy the decision to close seems timely.
Also as many of you know both of us have recently become mothers. Laura and Bryan had a baby boy, Tyler on September 21st and Katie and Roland had a baby girl, Karolin (Kari) on January 10th. Closing the store will free both of us to focus on motherhood - a challenge we both look forward to. Laura is also planning to start selling real estate in the area later this year, while Katie takes time to fully enjoy her little girl.
Although this decision seems right it does not make it any easier to say goodbye to The Site of the Green. Our family has been involved in this business since our dad started planting terrariums out of our garage when we were just little girls well over 30 years ago. We have years of amazing memories and have made so many great friends along the way. The products we have carried were something we all loved and enjoyed. We are collectors just like you. We will miss the great times at our Yard Sale, The Collectible Show and the special in-store events and promotions that we had at our various locations. We will also miss hearing about your collections and your personal stories about the special things you have found on your journeys.
We feel honoured to have been a part of this fine industry for so long and as we move into the next stage and challenge of life we look forward to the future while treasuring our memories of growing up at The Site of the Green.
Thank you for supporting our business all of these years. It has been a pleasure to serve you, to help you find those special pieces for your collections and for gift-giving. We wish each of you well as you continue to add to your collections.
